Many people know that when I am asked about my favorite voice of rock and roll, the first name that comes out of my mouth is Geoff Tate (Vocals for Queensryche). And seeing him in Lincoln doing an acoustic show was nothing short of awesome. Although, I kept waiting to hear more Queesryche songs than Geoff Tate songs, my preference.

BUT, the biggest surprise of my night was Faded Black. I have seen them perform on a number of occasions and they always deliver a good show. This show on May 1st at Knickerbockers was different. Not different bad, but different great! I have never seen them do an acoustic set and I was pleasantly surprised. These guys should do more of them. I know it is out of their element...WOW!

Seeing them full on, amplified rock and roll is very good, but stripped down acoustics equally as good. This is by far one of the best sets I have seen from these guys. It is because of shows like this that I love live music! Check out Faded Black here as well!

It's been a while since The Kris Lager Band have played Omaha. Since December they've been on tour, opened for Los Lonely Boys, recorded in Tab Benoit's studio in Louisiana, toured Colorado.

The Kris Lager Band is a Nebraska born group of musicians who have dedicated their lives to learning, living, and loving all aspects of the American music tradition. The Kris Lager Band plays a wide range of music from blues and rock, funk and soul, reggae, hip hop, to even gospel and zydeco and they always have a Good Time. The band consists of John Fairchild on the drums, Brandon Miller on the bass, Jeremiah Weir on the piano, organ, and squeeze-box, and Kris Lager on lead vocals and guitars.

The 4th annual Marchi Gras is almost here! The party and fundraiser will benefit The Sunshine Kids, an organization that provides events and activities for kids with cancer. Mitch Gettman recently graduated high school a semester early to continue to pursue his promising music career. Shortly after his well attended CD release event for "We Are the Mad Ones,"

Mitch took a trip to Chicago and decided that this was the place he wanted to continue to grow as a person and an artist. Instead of going to college like other people his age, Mitch will be exploring the big city of Chicago to find what else life has to offer. Unfortunately for some in Omaha, this means he won't be performing at area venues as often.

He will come back to say hello, and when he does, I'm sure a show will be lined up, but for now it will be few and far between. We are excited for Mitch and know with his talent and drive he will make the area proud. We hope people will come and send Mitch off on a positive note as he takes another giant step towards his dream of a career in music.

If there is one thing I can mention about myself is that I like beer, and I am not talking about the standard mass produced brew stacked high on every retail shelf or supermarket floor worldwide. I am referring to the regional craft beer breweries that take time to develop and create beverages with character and personality - soulful beers with unique and effervescent qualities that reflect the town in which they are born. This is why I am excited about the upcoming first annual Omaha Beer Week.

Omaha Beer Week 2012 is the inaugural kick-off celebration for this festival highlighting the areas top craft beer brewers. Omaha locals Upstream Brewery and Empyrean Brewing will be on site to offer some of their most popular beverages during this 10 day festivity. Nearby companies Lucky Bucket Brewing, Nebraska Brewing, and CIB Brewery will also be participating introducing beer aficionados and newcomers alike to a wide array of flavors and styles. The celebration has gained such interest that even select retailers and bars in Omaha are involved in showcasing and supporting the local beer scene.

Omaha bars The Crescent Moon, The House of Loom, The Lauter Tun, and Krug Park will be in attendance. HISTORIC FIRST - - ARTIST TO RECEIVE A RECORD BREAKING 3 NOMINATIONS

Omaha, NE, October 23, 2011 - The nominations for the 2011 Omaha Entertainment Awards were announced on Saturday October 15th 2011. Omaha based Hip Hop recording artist Galvanized Tron is the first artist to ever receive 3 nominations in the same year from the OEA's.

The Omaha Entertainment Awards is held each year and produces an event that recognizes the performing arts, visual arts and live music of the Omaha area. The gala is a red-carpet event that thanks the artists who keep Omaha culture vibrant. All OEA nominees will be showcasing there talents on November 11th 2011 at various venues to be announced in Omaha, NE. The awards show itself will be held in February 2012 in Omaha.

Galvanized Tron, who originally hails from Jacksonville, FL, released his self titled album in November of 2010. The album was released on Omaha based indie Hip Hop record label J. Stephens Music. Since the release Galvanized Tron has maintained a full schedule with live performances (over 30 live shows) and has opened for National acts; Snoop Dogg and Tech N9ne, released a music video and has received national radio and media coverage.

J. Stephens Music began operations in 2004 has now had 3 Hip Hop artists in the last 4 years nominated for an OEA award. To be a nominee is an honor, and it's a prestigious accolade to add to Galvanized Tron's ever increasing list of accomplishments says Justin "Juse" Ellis who is part of the J. Stephens Music staff.

Robert L. Jefferson Jr, better known as Galvanized Tron, has been nominated for the following categories: Best Album (all genres), Best Artist (all genres) and Best Hip Hop Artist. Music Nominating Chair for the Omaha Entertainment Awards MarQ Manner said "I am pretty sure he is the first Hip-Hop artist to be nominated in Best Artist and Best Album. When asked about the OEA nominations; Galvanized Tron said "I am greatly appreciative for the support; it's an honor to be considered for these awards".

Stockholm Syndrome is the brain child of Widespread Panic bassist Dave Schools and acclaimed singer/songwriter Jerry Joseph of the Jackmormons. What started as a "cool, if temporary, change of pace" has blown up into a full fledged band featuring an All-Star cast which also includes Danny Louis (Gov't Mule; keys), Eric McFadden (Les Claypool, P-Funk All Stars, Keb Mo'; guitar), and Wally Ingram (Jackson Browne, Sheryl Crow; drums). The group is touring in support of their recent, critically acclaimed album "Apollo." Due to everyone's busy schedule on the road with other bands, it's rare they get to tour, which is evident by their 13 show run of dates. We couldn't be more excited that they chose to make a stop in Omaha.

Monday, June 6th, 2011 - Omaha, NE: Summer tour and festival season is upon us again which means it's also time for the Omaha Entertainment and Arts Awards Summer Showcase. This year marks the 5th official event and we're looking forward to an amazing gathering of local artists and music fans. Once again, we'll take over the venues of Benson in Omaha for two nights to showcase some of the best and brightest Omaha, Lincoln and the surrounding communities have to offer.

The Summer Showcase is set for Fri., July 8th and Sat. July 9th. Spanning the stages of five venues will be a diverse line-up of musicians and performers. The showcase is a major fundraiser for the awards show, but the main focus has been, and always will be, to bring more awareness to the bands and performers in the area. This is also a chance for the board, music academies and fans to check out the artists before the nomination process begins. We promise this year will have a little something for everyone as we have representatives from Rock, Hip-Hop, Electronica, Indie, Experimental, Jam, Bluegrass, Blues and everything in between. Also this year, each band will have an additional 5 minutes for a total of 40 to showcase their talent.

As an added bonus, one band will be selected by fan voting to open the MAHA Music Festival on Sat. Aug. 13th to perform alongside Matisyahu, Guided by Voices, Cursive and many others. A voting box will be available at each venue both nights so attendees can vote for their favorite band.

01/12/2011 - Review of DJ Bishop

Our friend Kevin, from Showtime Music and The Omaha DJ Academy and gives OmahaNightOutGuide a little glimpse into Omaha's Nightclub scene. Thank you Kevin for dropping by and letting us use your review.

The Bar Fly has been in Omaha for several years and has gone through several Omaha DJ's, Several which I know personally.

Going into the review of DJ Bishop I already knew he had a rep of being a top DJ.

When we greeted, he was setting up so I went into what he was using for DJ equipment. Bishop uses all digital equipment. (no turntables)

The night started slow but by the time I left there were over 80 people in the club.

There is nothing worse than a bar that isn't very busy,because most DJ's feel the pressure of having people show up. AKA THE FOLLOWING....

During the time I was there a lot of people would come up and give requests and pay homage to there DJ. The people that were there seemed very fond of DJ Bishop.

Q & A

K: What kind of music do you like playing?

Bishop: Top 40

I was surprised by his answer because there a lot of street DJ's out there that are anti top 40. This was refreshing because that means he likes playing what the masses like which is pretty good dance music. In Omaha there are a few pocket areas that either like top 40, country/rock, Hood/hip hop or techno. At one point I took a request for him, but it didn't take long to know he wasn't going to play it.

K: Are you going to play that request in here?

B: No man, I am not gonna go hard up in here like that.

That tells me he is in the bar to play to the majority, which if your a smart DJ and want to keep your job you will do that. Don't get confused I am sure Bishop likes Hood/Hip Hop too, He is smart enough and a seasoned enough DJ to know better.

DJ Gigs are hard to come by and if you want to stay the house DJ you better know where it's at.

After watching a bit I could tell Bishop was going hard, the average person wouldn't have a clue, he was only wearing an ear bud on the left side which at that view nobody could see. So if you had to guess you would have thought he did all this mixing prior to coming to the gig.

The last time I saw somebody working there hands that fast between the CPU, mixer, and Pioneers was a typist going over 150 words per min. (DJ Scottie Pimpn' likeness when going over controls; see my review of Scottie Pimpin'.

Yes that is very fast. All that being said he still had time to get on the mic or just get into the groove of the moment.

On the mixer nothing special as far as hand technique, which I am sure you DJ's reading this know what I mean. What blows you away about Bishop is his effortless command of the equipment he is using. -Digital Master. If I was in the crowd I could have sworn it was all pre-programed. His loops and drops were the freshest I have heard. He has a musicians ear and I wouldn't be surprised if he could guess the BPM'S, he also has an extensive song library in his mind, and it covers most genres.

There were a lot of things I admired about DJ Bishop, he wasn't afraid to go hard hit after hit to the point of a sista about collapsing on the dance floor, yes I am a witness.

I appreciate a lot of different DJ's styles, but as far as music knowledge and reading a crowd perfectl I would put DJ Bishop up there with DJ Skyscraper another Omaha DJ which practices at the Omaha DJ Academy.

I have a lot of respect for DJ's that are into all kinds of music, and to me it can only make you better.I like a DJ that Say's, "yea I like country, disco,rap, hip hop," without worrying what another DJ may think. To me being closed minded can only hurt your growth as a DJ.

K: When did you start DJ'ng

B: 1995

K: Do you play on turntables?

B: No but I am gonna start soon.

K: Do you know, so -n- so DJ's?

B: No I don't, to busy to get out.

To me this is very Interesting because for a DJ, everyone knows and admires Bishop. He only knew a hand full or just met a few DJ's I named to him. That tells me he is a working DJ and doesn't have time to socialize.

During the day DJ Bishop sells commercial real estate and has a family with a 12 year old son.

All in all this was a great experience to write DJ Bishop up, I not only met a Master DJ but I think I made a new friend. For those of you who want to go get your groove on and listen to an amazing DJ do his thing, GO TO BAR FLY AND DO IT NOW!!!!!! You will not be disappointed, I can personally guarantee it.

This piece of equipment is very useful when it comes to playing music that was never pressed on vinyl or just isn't available yet. The scratching mechanism makes the CD player very much compatible with the turntable when using them interchangeably plus, you can adjust the speed of the start & stop functions.

In addition, there is a feature that keeps the master tempo voice pitch while changing the speed itself which is very helpful when doing remixes live. On top of all this, the CDJ reads most CDs, CDRs, and even CDRWs. The CDJ allows a DJ to set 3 different cue points so he/she can bounce back and forth to different parts of the song which can be useful to actually change the rhythm of the song itself. All of this combined with many other features including a digital output jack makes this piece of equipment top notch in the realm of DJing. Bishop has been using this piece of equipment for over 5 years, He also stated Pioneer is the best, they are made to last.

RANE 57 SL mixer with scratch live

the Serato Scratch Live software will recognize recognize iTunes library right away, The magnetic faders on the mixer are smooth as butter, and they made Bishops mixing very pleasurable.
The best thing about this unit is the amount of controls on the mixer that can be assigned to the software parameters in Scratch Live. These can be assigned with a simple right-click, and each button has a long list of parameters that it can be assigned to.

DICER

A cue point and looping button based USB interface that works with Serato Scratch Live and other digital DJ software.

This Saturday night wasn’t like others. I just finished a wedding reception and headed over to The Club Seville to check out Hip-hop DJ Scottie Pimpin’ this definitely wasn’t my neck of the woods but hey, I am a seasoned DJ with over 5,000 gigs under my belt, I have spoken in front of thousands of people and organized huge pressure packed events. But tonight really opened my eyes to the other Side of Dj’n

Arrive @ 11:15pm, the club is packed and no where to park, so like everyone else I use my imagination and squeeze in between a curb and a Caddy. Security is pretty tight and they have the bar and parking lot on lock down. No I.D required, because I am pretty sure I do look like a 40 year old white man, Door man checks his list and Scottie Pimpin’ has me down.

After a bit I start to ask S.P. questions about DJ’n, how he learned and what his strengths were etc.

Now, I am pretty good at observing but I really wanted to focus on what his strengths were and what set him apart from other DJ’s, After a bit I noticed I wasn’t getting much out of him and almost felt like I was intruding. So what’s a man gotta do to open the door a little bit? Yep, Crown and Coke and the bartender made 2 tall ones. So after a bit I realized what was really going on with S.P.

He was straight up in a dog fight and dug in for the night. Seriously, Him against the whole room, and he wasn’t about to lose this fight.

Quote S.P. “Man it’s a dog fight in here, if you’re not on you’re a game they will tear you apart”

K.S. In my opinion this gives him an aura, a no nonsense kinda man, people take notice and respect that.

Q: Where Did you learn your style of DJ’ng?

A: I taught myself, that’s why my style is so F’d up.

Q: Why did you join a DJ crew?

A: To Iearn and practice so I can be a better DJ.

Q: Who are your influences?

A: I DJ by the "Marcus of Queesnbury Standards." I'm cut from the cloth of real DJ's. DJ Bishop, Mo Smooth, Mario Scratch, DJ Real, Bizzy B, Mista Soull, Brasko, etc. I come from that lineage.

S.P was constantly going back and forth from one Pioneer turntable to another, and not to mention pushing buttons and knobs every other micro second with the precision of a skilled surgeon. For a moment I was lost in pure DJ heaven. When I asked where he gets his music he just shrugs, and the reason I asked this is because I have never heard of one song he played, and I will put my music knowledge up against anyone. S.P. goes on to tell me he isn’t sure where these people hear the songs he plays because they’re not on the radio, He doesn’t even use a set list to reference. While going through the knobs and buttons perfecting every beat, pitch, effect, BPM you name it, he still has time to scroll through a song list with his right hand while the left continues the fight. I got the feeling he was guarding some DJ secrets when it came to his set list, because music is easy to get but a set list in a club like the Seville is like finding the Holy Grail. Most DJ’s would die to have S.P.’s set list, but good luck because it’s all in his head dancing around to a perfect beat.

After a few sets and being very content with what I came to see, I get another drink, while standing in line the music just stops for at least 30 seconds, this is like a bomb going off usually for a DJ, the biggest no-no a DJ can make, so I brace for the cat calls people yelling at the DJ or just an awkward silence. But the music goes on and everyone continues dancing and socializing like it never happened.

Let me tell you I have been in this situation and it’s not fun. So I get back to the booth and ask what happened, he just keeps adjusting knobs and then finally says, aw that was just some booty bouncing into my rig.

That’s when it hit me; the people that came to this club really respect their DJ and know that there is no way in hell that that dead air was his fault. Scottie Pimpin’ is a machine and too damn good of a DJ to have something like that happen on his watch and the people at the bar know it.

Just as I am about ready to leave a fight breaks out, a drink flies up in the air S.P. and I reach for the laptop and whatever else we can save at the same exact time. Knowing full well this could be the end of a great night with 1 hour to go and the end of his DJ rig and his livelihood.

Luckily we escaped without anything being broken, just a hard drive and CPU out of whack for a few min.

As calm and cool as S.P. was all night he handles this the same way. Reboot s CPU and hard drive, So I proceed to get on the mic, calling out shot specials and telling people to tip the bar staff and buy their DJ a drink and sure enough he has 2 before you can blink an eye. Back to business as usual.

Going into the night I knew I was going to observe a good DJ, but S.P. really opened my eyes to what can be normally a bad situation for most DJ’s and make it seem really flawless, at the Club Seville there is no room for errors, top 40 music, or bad skillz on the turntable, you have to be the man in charge of the whole vibe going on, people are looking to you for money well spent in their favorite club. I walk away knowing I just saw one of the best DJ’ shows I have seen in some time. It wasn’t the music that made it for me, but the whole symphony, the crowd in perfect motion, A DJ hitting on all cylinders making music into art.

There are a lot of different kinds of DJ’s, radio DJ, Wedding DJ, KJ, Rave DJ, hip hop, turntablelist etc.

Scottie Pimpin’ In my opinion is a master Blender and transitionist with very good scratching skillz, what sets him apart from other talented DJ’s is reading the crowd and giving them what they want all night long. He doesn’t say a lot on the mic or even say a lot to people in the club. He just speaks by his actions in the DJ booth. The fact that I wasn’t into the music or the scene He left me wanting for more, and that’s the mark of a great DJ.

I was invited to lunch by a friend to Blue Planet Natural Grill at 6307 Center Street. Easily located on the south side of Center on 67th St. It is an unassuming place from a distance. Once inside it was very warm feeling inside. The entire east wall was glass panel looking out onto their patio. Walls painted in very warm, relaxing colors. I got there right at the beginning of the lunch rush so getting my order in was quick and easy. Everything flowed very nicely from counter to table, and I had to confirm with the Assistant General Manager that it was not a franchise, just because everything seemed so fluid. I was assured that Blue Planet is a locally owned and operated restaurant in Omaha. Admittedly, when I was invited to lunch, I was a bit skeptical as my recent experiences with "natural" restaurants is a menu with out meat on it. This is as far from the truth with the Blue Planet as you can get, they even have 100% Black Angus Beef Burgers!! The vision here is healthy but still good, all of their protein is hormone and antibiotic free. If you want a lesson on what hormone release does to the flavor and quality of the protein you eat, I could explain in great detai, but a person can also easily Google it. When I went there, I checked their menu online and had decided to try the Ahi Tuna Sandwich with Chai. However after meeting witht the management team, they showed me the special of the day Tuscan Chicken Penne. Not one to order off the menu, I went for it. It came with a house salad of spring greens and Blue Planet uses Newman's Own dressing. I plowed through the salad and took my first hit off the Chai, and was delighted at it with a very subtle taste of cinnamon. My entree was brought to me in a big bowl, very nicely garnished (atypical of most franchises I have eaten, big clue it was local at that point), with a nice balsamic vinegar drizzle over it. At first look, it seemed very unassuming, but this bowl of pasta had a secret, it was a bit spicy. I loved it! It has long been my belief that healthy food was bland and flavorless. This was good, really good. The sauce was not too heavy and was not overpowering, the combination of penne, chicken and balsamic evened out the heat. The portion wasn't huge, but I felt like I got my money's worth from it, the special was only $8.99. What I like about this place is that they have five different burgers listed on their menu, however they also have five different meats to choose from, Turkey Burger, Veggie Burger, Black Bean Burger, Angus Beef and Chicken Breast, which gives you 25 burger options, and they are all very reasonably priced too! I am going back to Blue Planet Natural Grill again, this time to get something off the menu...that Ahi Tuna Sandwich is still calling my name.
