I finally found a day that I could get to North O and also got the invite to come and have lunch at Big Mama's Kitchen. I can not begin to describe the feeling I have from eating this food and the great company I had in General Manager Gladys Harrison. Being a person who never orders off the menu, because it something that is done everyday, I went for the stuffed porkloin special, with macaroni and cheese and sweet potato pudding. In the 30 plus year I have spent cooking I have never been able to make pork loin do what they did...fall apart. The stuffing was an apple stuffing which was good as well. The mac and cheese is made fresh, not from a box, it was so good, I could have eaten it all day. The second side was sweet potato pudding, there is no one word that can explain how I felt after I ate this except WOW! I have grown up loving sweet potatoes and this went to a whole new level, and as if that was not enough...I had me a little taste of Big Mama's famous Sweet Potato Pie Ice Cream. I can officially say that I have seen everything imaginable done with a sweet potato. Ms. Harrison also tells me that they have sweet potato pie ice cream sandwiches, I would have taken a case of them back to the office. Everything aside, this is definately a destination eating establishment, but man it is worth every mile to drive to Big Mama's Kitchen and grab a hold of her food. Amazing, and no Gladys, I wasn't just saying that because you were sitting there, now you sound like my mom.

I'm originally from the South and the only other time I've had food this good was when my Memaw cooked it! I'd heard about Big Mama's through the Omaha Night Out Guide and my boyfriend remembered seeing it on DDD. I just got back from visiting family in Georgia but didn't get a chance to get some good ol' fashioned Southern cooking so we went to Big Mama's instead. Appetizers - we had a bowl of greens with cornbread and some fried green tomatoes. The bowl of greens was BIG and soooo good, I couldn't stop eating it. By the time my dinner arrived, I was already full. The tomatoes were perfect. Dinner - he had the catfish, I had the chicken. We both had macaroni and cheese, I got fried okra and he got sweet potato fries. The sides were great but the catfish and the chicken were amazing! Drinks - I had 3 glasses of sweet tea! And our server even let me take one of those refills home in a to-go cup with me. Dessert - we brought home a pint of sweet potato ice cream (which you can also order online). The ice cream alone was worth the trip! If you like pumpkin pie, you'll LOVE the sweet potato ice cream. Location - If you're familiar with Omaha, it's not hard to find. It's about 3 blocks north of Maple on 45th. Just take North 75 to Lake Street, take Lake to 45th, turn right and go to the 3200 block. It's in an old school building, just follow the signs in the parking lot. Staff - very friendly staff, the whole place just has a "family" feeling to it. I can't say enough good things about Big Mama's Kitchen.
